"Deciphering insect behaviours through genetic research on their sense of smell"
Many insects survive by eating plants, including agricultural crops and produce. In insects the sense of smell, or olfaction, is the dominant sense, and most insect behaviors are strongly influenced by detection of odorants in the insect environment. My research is focused on insects that eat apples, with specific attention paid to odorant receptor proteins that mediate olfactory detection by the insect’s olfactory sensory system.
