How do we create fair food systems? Urban perspectives with a focus on the global south

seminars, workshops |

Welcome to a webinar organised by SLU Urban Futures and SLU Global. In the lead up to the UN’s Food Systems Summit 2021, this webinar aims to provide an urban perspective on creating just food systems with a focus on the global south.

Food systems encompass a constellation of activities relating to the production, processing, distribution and consumption of food, which is intrinsically linked with the health of our societies and the environment, as well as our economy and cultures. Rapid urbanization and climate change are significantly changing the way food is produced and consumed; and combined with the complexities of rising poverty and malnutrition in urban areas, urgent short-term and long-term solutions are required to achieve equitable distribution and access to healthy and nutritious food. This seminar aims to better understand the challenges posed by urbanization in low and middle-income countries in connection with the ambition to achieve healthier, sustainable and equitable food systems.

Speakers:

  • Sharelle Polack, Programme Lead, Urban Governance for Nutrition, Global Institute for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)
  • Paulina Bizzotto Molina, Policy Officer, Sustainable Food Systems, European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM)
  • Judy Matu, Chairlady of Association for Women in Agriculture Kenya.
  • Assem Abu Hatab, Associate Professor at the Department for Economics, SLU
