According to the Ordinance on Environmental Management in Government Agencies (SFS 2009:907), SLU must work in line with a set environmental management system.

SLU has been environmentally certified according to ISO 14001 since 2016, following a decision by the vice-chancellor. Lövsta Livestock Research Centre is also certified according to the quality standard ISO 9001.

The environmental certificate describes which operations that are certified and the certificate's validity period. Within each operation, there are one or several environmental coordinators/representatives. There are also quality coordinators where ISO 9001 is relevant.

Environmental standard ISO 14001

SLU subscribes to a number of standards, including the standards on environmental and quality certification, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. The standards are available via a service provided by the Swedish Standards Institute. This is a multi-user licence that allows SLU to print standards and save them electronically during the contract period. All SLU employees can access these standards electronically if logged in with their AD account.

EMAS

EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is the EU’s voluntary environmental management and environmental audit regulation. SLU became EMAS registered in 2019. EMAS is more ambitious than the ISO standard. In order to be registered in EMAS, in addition to meeting the ISO 14001 requirements, you must also conduct an annual environmental review. This review must subsequently be assessed by a third party. The environmental reviews are assessed and approved by RISE and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

PRME certification for sustainable development

PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education) is a UN initiative to create a platform for educating future business managers with a commitment to sustainble development. At SLU, this is part of the syllabus for our programmes and courses in business administration.
