New password management

Published: 20 January 2025

The last time you’ll need to change your password? New password rules take effect starting January 2025.

From January 2025, we are changing the way passwords are handled at SLU.

  • You no longer need to change your password regularly.
  • When you next change your password, it must be at least 12 characters long. There are no other password requirements.

You can keep your new password for as long as you want unless:

  • you change it yourself or
  • SLU IT discovers that your account may have been hacked.

The new rules follow security recommendations based on security research. Research shows that a long password with no requirement for regular changes is more secure than a short and complex password that is difficult to memorize and must be changed. The new rules are decided by the Chief Operating Director (see link below, in Swedish only).

Tips and advice

  • Password phrases

A good password is long. You can easily do this by combining several words into one phrase, for examplesunshinecrocodileuppsala.

  • Password manager

A password manager helps you protect all your passwords with a master password. It can be linked to your browser, creating secure passwords and making it easier to log in to different services.

Find more information about password managers on the Internet Foundation's Internet knowledge website (in Swedish).

How to protect your password

  • Never give your password to anyone else.
  • Do not use the same password on other services outside SLU. If another service is hacked, your password could be used to access SLU services.
