On completion of the course, students will be able to:- analyse factors affecting micropropagation and perform tissue culture independently
- describe different genetic transformation methods and techniques used in molecular biology
- independently design a research project using biotechnological approaches.
Content
The course comprises:- theory of tissue culture, in particular in vitro shoot and root culture, genetic transformation, gene cloning and various techniques in molecular biology
- establishment of new in vitro cultures, meristem culture and in vitro rooting, genetic transformation via Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer, DNA-isolation and analyses of gene expression and PCR
- demonstrations of transformation methods such as particle bombardment and electroporation
- project design focusing on specific problems, e.g. root formation, disease resistance and quality aspects to illustrate potential solutions that biotechnology can provide.
Scheduled practicals, seminars and study visits are compulsory.
Formats and requirements for examination
The examination consists of written and oral presentation of reports. To pass the course, approved participation in all course components, approved reports and approved oral presentations are required. If a student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.If a student has been granted targeted study support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative form of assessment.
If this course is discontinued, SLU will decide on transitional provisions for the examination of students admitted under this syllabus who have not yet been awarded a Pass grade.
For the assessment an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. For more information, please refer to the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

In the research plan of the case study, the research goals are clear, experimental designs are logical, methods are feasible and expected results are clearly stated.

The above criteria should be clearly shown in 1) written report of the case study and 2) oral presentations on the three seminars. The quality of presentations and questions arose to presenters by opponents as well as active participation in discussions during seminar will be taken into consideration when grading!
Course credits:
The course credits will be based on the results of seminar on literature study, performance and presentation of laboratory practices, seminar and written report of the case study. The final grading will consist different parts of the course according to the table below:

Pass (3): Fulfil all criteria at grade 3, participation in course compulsory activities and approved report for the case study handed in within the deadline.
