Maria Knutson Wedel proposed as new SLU vice-chancellor

Maria Knutson Wedel is proposed by the board of SLU, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, as the new vice-chancellor. She succeeds professor Peter Högberg, who leaves at the end of this year.
Maria Knutson Wedel, aged 55, has been a vice president at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg since 2012 with responsibility for, among other things, education. She became a professor in engineering materials in 2009. Wedel received her MSc in engineering physics in 1988 and PhD in physics in 1996.
"I am pleased to be able to propose to the government Maria Knutson Wedel as the board's candidate as the vice-chancellor of SLU," says chairman of the board, Rolf Brennerfelt. “She has both the leadership skills required and the scientific foundation. Her background and experience fit in with the requirements we set in the requirements profile for the service.”
The Swedish government makes the final appointement, which is expected to happen in early 2019. Maria Knutson Wedel is expected to enter the vice-chancellor's post in the summer of 2019. Until then, SLU's current deputy vice-chancellor Karin Holmgren will be the acting vice-chancellor.
At the Monday's meeting, the SLU board also decided to appoint SLU pro vice-chancellor Erik Fahlbeck as acting deputy vice-chancellor during the same period.
