Reimbursement of Tuition Fees

Last changed: 09 February 2024

If you have paid your tuition fees, but are unable to participate in your studies you can request a refund.

SLU can only refund your tuition fees if one of the following applies:

  • There are special reasons meaning you are unable to participate in your studies.
  • You are now exempt from paying fees.

You must have documentation that proves you have been prevented from participating in your studies or that you are now exempt from paying fees. The refund can only be paid to the account from which the original payment was made.

Checklist

  1. There is a special reason why you have been prevented from participating in your studies or that you are no longer required to pay fees.
    1. One common reason for students being unable to participate in their studies is that they have not received their residence permit in time.
    2. Please note that simply changing your mind and deciding not to study at SLU is not classed as a special reason for preventing you from participating in your studies. The reason preventing you from studying must be beyond your control.

  2. Email tuitionfees@slu.se and request a refund, stating the reason why. Attach any documentation proving your reasons in PDF format. If you paid your tuition fees from a Swedish bank account, you need to include an account statement showing the transaction. The following information must be included in a single PDF:
    1. name of the account holder
    2. full account number – including clearing number
    3. payment date
    4. recipient
    5. amount.

  3. An administrative officer will assess your documentation. You may need to provide supplementary information.

  4. The administrative officer will either approve or reject your application. You will be emailed the decision. If your reasons for requiring a refund arose during the semester, you will be refunded calculated from the day you were prevented from participating in your studies or became exempted from paying fees.

  5. The refund can only be paid to the account from which the original payment was made.
    1. If the payment was made from a Swedish bank account, but you did not submit the documents stipulated under point 2, you need to do so.

  6. You will receive an email from tuitionfees@slu.se once SLU has register the refund. We cannot speed up the process.

  7. The time it takes for the fee to reach the account varies considerably. It depends entirely on the account from which the fees were paid. It can take one month. Please be patient.

You may need to contact your bank to receive your tuition fees refund if they were paid through a third party service such as Swift. Make sure to have your transaction receipt. Unfortunately, SLU is unable to help you access your fees once they have left SLU’s account. SLU does not charge for the refund, however we take no responsibility for fees that may be incurred once the money has left SLU’s account.

Refunds are made in SEK, meaning changes in the exchange rate may result in you receiving a different amount to the one you paid.
