GIS and forest remote sensing

The course is bases on self study, lectures, practical computer exercises and simple field measurement. The course is structured in five teaching blocks, where each block contains a theory and a practical part. In parallel with these, there will be examples of forest applications and guest lectures, to show important data sources and working methods.

Block 1, Introduction to GIS, theoretical foundations in modeling the world, geodesy and data structures with a focus on vector data. Exercise in digitization and editing as well as map production.

Block 2, Theory vector-based analyzes. Exercise in geodatabase management, spatial and non-spatial searches and spatial analyzes in vector data.

Block 3, Data collection in the field, including Check-out / check-in of data from geodatabase.

Block 4, Theory raster-based analyzes. Exercise in geodatabase management, spatial and non-spatial searches and spatial analyzes in raster data.

Block 5, Theory introduction to remote sensing. Exercise in classification of satellite images and forest estimates based on laser data and presentation of existing data sources of geographical information for forest applications.

The Forestry Science content is divided into sub-areas as follows:

  • 2 credits Objective, planning and policy

  • 2 credits Work processes

  • 3,5 credits Other in Forestry Science
