Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide basic knowledge in zoology, including zooecology, zoophysiology and entomology. Special focus will be on the importance of the fauna for, and impact on, ecosystems functions in relation to natural disturbances, forest damage, and risk of disease.

After completing the course, students should be able to

• explain basic principles, concepts and terminology in zoology and entomology

• describe the evolution, morphology, and systematics of the animal world and demonstrate skills in identifying differences and similarities between animal groups

• describe the animals’ adaptations to the outside world and life functions

• explain basic morphological concepts and functions

• describe the physiological processes and functions of different groups of animals.

• describe the animals’ dependence on, significance for, and impact on, forest ecosystems

• apply standard inventory methods and accompanying data management as well as methods in zoological research and environmental analysis

• propose measures to benefit insects and vertebrates in the farmed landscape.

Content

Through lectures as well as compulsory exercises and laboratory work, the course provides basic knowledge in terrestrial and aquatic zoology, including the animal world’s different life forms, the animals’ morphology, systematics, evolution, their adaptations to the outside world and life functions. Zoophysiology with physiological processes is treated. A key aspect is the importance of animals for, and impact on, forest ecosystems. Here, special emphasis is placed on conservation/ecological restoration and forest health in relation to biodiversity, insect infestations, and grazing damage. Methodologies for inventory and monitoring of animal populations as well as nature conservation management to benefit animals are treated.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
