Objectives

The aim of the course is to gain understanding and nomenclature about the plant structure, to learn to communicate about plants, to get an overview about the variation of plants and their end uses, as well as understanding of the relation to the growth site.

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

- describe the basic morphological structure of plants and function of different parts of plants

- identify horticultural plants according to a basic assortment, and the most important plant families in horticulture

- describe the basics of plant systematics and apply the basic rules of plant nomenclature

- describe important factors that affect morphology of plants in horticultural and natural environments.

Content

The course includes botanical nomenclature, morphology and plant knowledge by studying:

- how plants look like and how this can vary between and within species

- names of plants and the function of different names

- how to identify different plants and groups.

The course includes lectures (both webbased and live), demonstrations (indoors and outdoors) and exercises. Selfstudies give time for reading literature and processing of the course contents.

Some of the scheduled exercises are mandatory, which will be marked in the course schedule.
