Production and quality evaluation of forages

The course consists of lectures and the following compulsory components:


laboratory sessions, exercises, seminars, study visits and project work.


The course deals with forage cultivation, harvesting methods and conservation of feed for ley and other roughages, maintenance and use of temporary grasslands and meadow, and use and management of semi-natural grasslands.


The course also deals with methods for evaluating the nutritional quality of forage to be used for different categories of animals.

Welcome to BI1327 – Production and quality evaluation of forages

The overall aim of the course is to provide a general understanding of forage production through a synergy between arable and animal farming, in the perspective of sustainable development and sustainable use of natural resources.

The course consists of lectures and the following compulsory components: laboratory sessions, exercises, group discussions, seminars, study visits and a project work about scientific writing. The course deals with forage cultivation, harvesting methods and conservation of feed for ley and other roughages, maintenance and use of temporary grasslands and meadow, and use and management of semi-natural grasslands. The course also deals with methods for evaluating the nutritional quality of forage to be used for different categories of animals.

Course segments on production of forage will be in common with students from animal science in the course HV0166 – Feed science and forage production. These courses are 15 credits (100 %) each on advanced level and are given March 20–May 31.

Please find information of a mandatory course book by Frame & Laidlaw that have to be available at the start of the course. The book is available on-line, e.g. on https://www.adlibris.com/se/e-bok/improved-grassland-management-9781847977274 . There will also be some books in the Ultuna library, both e-books and printed versions. I recommend you to fix this book as soon as possible. In addition, there will be more literature available on Canvas later on. A detailed schedule will be available 4 weeks prior to course start.
