Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge in applied economics focusing on the topics of agricultural- and environmental economics. The course is centered on resource use related sustainability challenges and policy oriented agricultural and environmental conflict of goals.

After completing the course, students should be able to:

• describe the function and environmental impact of agriculture based on key microeconomic concepts such as externalities, public goods, multifunctionality, transaction costs, property rights and economic efficiency;

• explain how monetary welfare measures can be used to study how consumers value changes in environmental quality;

• describe relations between the Kuznet curve and the Environmental Kuznet Curve in a long-term perspective;

• describe and demonstrate critical reflectivity with a focus on how environmental and agricultural policies can be designed to steer towards sustainability, environmental policy and other policy objectives as well as economic efficiency;

• problematize the importance of multilateral economic instruments and global climate agreements in order to meet demands for reduced emissions based on trade theory.

Content

The course is carried out with the help of lectures, exercises, compulsory seminar and self-study.

The course is about understanding the function of agriculture and its environmental impact from an economic perspective centered on key microeconomic theories and concepts.

The course deals with how economic instruments can handle environmental problems and how environmental and agricultural policy can be designed to steer towards environmental policy objectives, economic efficiency and sustainability challenges.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed exam.

Approved participation in compulsory seminar.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
