The aim of the course is to give students a basic overview of key concepts and theories in natural resource management that contribute to the understanding of complex natural resource dilemmas.
After completion the student shall, orally and in writing, be able to:
account for different theoretical perspectives and central concepts within the subject fields of resource governance and ecology;
describe, and critically discuss, the concept of sustainable development;
describe how different natural resources are institutionally embedded at different spatial and temporal scales;
account for different conflicting objectives in the governance of natural resources and discuss these from ecological and societal perspectives;
account for ecological and societal impacts of the human use of natural resources.
Content
The main content of the course consists of a broad introduction to different theoretical perspectives as a base for understanding "man and nature" relations and the governance of natural resources. The course covers current natural resource dilemmas and how they are managed in societal contexts at local, national and international levels. Further, the course deals with ecological effects of various forms of natural resource management, and how the governance of resources is institutionally embedded at local, regional and global levels. The course comprises of a mixture of lectures and autonomous work, individually and in groups, which is presented and discussed during seminars. The course literature is discussed during lectures and in seminars and students are expected to use the literature during different forms of autonomous work and discussions.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
The course objectives are assessed through written assignments and seminar exercises. Approved examination and approved participation in compulsory sessions are required for passing the course.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
