Objectives

To provide understanding to students with various backgrounds of different landscape architecture theories and viewpoints through history and their relation to practices of landscape architecture, and to convey basic knowledge of methods and methodologies in landscape architecture research.

After completion of the course the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

• understand theories and concepts in landscape architecture

• discuss major fields of landscape architecture research, their methodology and relation to other disciplines

• discuss key theories and case studies of landscape architecture history in Sweden and internationally; critically relate these knowledges to the development of modern society

• elaborate practical implications from theories in landscape architecture and discuss main theoretical viewpoints in today’s practice in landscape architecture and its relation to sustainability.

Judgement and approach

• reflect on a personal approach in the field of landscape architecture and future professional role,

• decode contemporary landscapes and reflect on them from a personal point of view concerning studied theories,

• propose relevant methods and methodologies for studies in landscape architecture research.

Content

The course contains lectures, literature seminars with oral presentation and / or written reflections on studied literature, as well as assignments that are performed both individually and in groups.

The assignments can, for example, consist of case studies where students analyze a completed project based on studied theories and discuss and suggest methods for a hypothetical case study of the project.

The course literature deals with important theories in landscape architecture from historical texts to contemporary discourses.

Lectures given within the framework of the course are intended to introduce theories and methods used in landscape architecture.

Of particular importance is critical thinking and the use of graphic representations such as sketches, photographs, diagrams, drawings, etc. as a complement to the written and spoken word.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

The quality of compulsory assignments and reports submitted by students will be evaluated throughout the course. The students’ ability to make oral presentations and their ability to engage each other in critical and analytical discussions will also be evaluated in the project work and in seminars. Specifications of compulsory attendance and assignments are given at course start.

• If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.

• If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.

• If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.

• For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
