Urban challenges
The course will introduce urban challenges to the students and relate these to national and global goals. Knowledge about available concrete solutions is needed to be able to plan for sustainable cities and this is included in the course. Students with different academic background and professional experience will contribute with their knowledge to the understanding of the situation in the urban environment.
The urban situation and possibility to make changes is in focus with lectures from researchers and professionals within the area of sustainable development and the students will get a view of the current challenges and prominent questions. Seminars will give the students insight into the challenges of the urban environment, train the students presentations skills and how to condense information.
A few tasks that are more substantial are included in the course giving the students the opportunity to communicate the knowledge they have required during the course. These tasks are handed in and graded. Seminars may be compulsory or add to the grading at the final evaluation and grading of the student.
The course contains; lectures, literature studies, seminars, compulsory field visits and individual tasks.

Objectives
The aim of the course is to give the students an increased understanding of the main challenges of the urban environment and solutions for how to create a sustainable society while integrating ecological, economic, social and cultural factors. The course may be viewed as an advanced introduction to sustainable landscape planning.
The students will be able to;
Search for, compile and present, in writing and orally, information about the different aspects of a sustainable urban development (ecological, economic, social and cultural) and the possibilities that are available to reach such a development.
Frame a relevant scientific question on the subject and link conclusions to these
Understand the complexity of the current challenges for a sustainable urban environment
Problematize and analyse the needs and interests of different stakeholders and users and put this in relation to the physical environment (built infrastructure, climate, ecological prerequisites, geological location, demography)
Understand the importance of the physical environment for the wellbeing, happiness of people and for people to have a rich social life
Understand the city from a global to a local perspective and the relationship between the cities and the rural environment
Know solutions for how to create the conditions for a sustainable urban development and meet the challenges of the urban environment
Know basic concepts used in urban planning and management

Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
The examination consists mainly of evaluation of the individual tasks. For a pass grade in the course, active participation in compulsory components is required.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
