Objectives

The course intends to give the student basic knowledge in European garden history as a tool for the future professional roles. The aim is to give the student an understanding of the form and contents of the garden as an expression of human needs and values. An additional aim is to develop skills in academic writing as a way to present and communicate and as a part in the progression on the programmes.

After completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• Account for the outlines of European garden history concerning era, function, spatial design, plant composition and use of materials.

• Apply the knowledge of s the outlines of garden history in the analysis of a given location in an academic written practical assignment.

• Understand how knowledge of garden history is relevant and can be used in the future professional roles.

Content

The course deals with garden history focusing on Europe and Sweden in a conceptual and social context. During the course, garden history is studied with the attention directed to the relationships between material, function and aesthetics, as well as the relations between indoor and outdoor environments. Here, the different professional roles in relation to the structure of a garden or park are also concerned, use and care as well as how garden history knowledge can be used as a starting point in garden design.

Literature studies, lectures, seminars, field trips and an individual written practical assignment provides training in describing and analysing an individual park in a conceptual and societal context. The course is a part of the generic progression for academic writing on the programmes.

Seminars, field trips and practical assignment are mandatory.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Attendance and participation in exercises, seminars and field trips.

Passed written practical assignment including oral presentation and passed written examination.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
