After completing the course the students shall:
-have an orientation on EU environmental law,
-have knowledge about the most important legal provisions within Swedish environmental law, thus the rules on the protection of the environment (water, air, ecology, landscape, etc.) that apply on land use and natural resource extraction and at different kind of handling of hazardous products
-have knowledge of environmental processes and on legal methods for environmental control
-have methodical skills in the practical application of environmental law.
Content
The course includes education on mainly the following:
Basic law and the basic relevant EU law: the aim is to give the knowledge of rules of law, sources of law and application of law so that the following environmental legal education can be understood.
Land use planning: Mainly the Swedish plan and building act and the Swedish environmental code rules on the management of land and water areas.
General environmental code parts: the rules are universal to the entire scope of the code; General rules of consideration, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Environmental Quality Standards (EQS), examination and supervision, etc.
Nature conservation: environmental code rules on nature conservation and species protection as well as the Forestry Act.
-Protection legislation: environmental code rules concerning environmentally hazardous activities and the protection of public health, agriculture, chemicals and waste.
-Legislation on natural resource extraction, for example, environmental code rules on water operations, mineral legislation and legislation on hunting and fishing. The code rules are treated fairly in depth, other legislation in general terms.
-Reparative requirements and penalties: An orientation in Environmental code rules relating to contaminated sites, compensation for environmental damage and sanctions.
The course is conducted by means of lectures, exercises, seminars and tutorials
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed seminar presentations, passed exam and participation in the compulsory activities.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
