Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with deeper knowledge in veterinary nursing of anaesthesia, emergency and intensive care with the focus on horses, dogs and cats.
After completing the course, students shall be able to
- identify the veterinary nursing needs and justify the interventions for patients with special requirements in anaesthesia, emergency, and intensive care,
- describe and justify the veterinary nursing care, monitoring, and pain assessment for high-risk patients during anaesthesia, emergency, and intensive care,
- explain the function and maintenance of advanced medical equipment, catheters and tubes,
- demonstrate the ability to sample and handle blood gases, assess deviations, and propose corrective measures,
- explain the principles of triage and apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques,
- describe and justify the selection of animal nursing interventions during the peri-anaesthetic period for laboratory animals.
Content
Subject-related content
The course covers various nursing needs, treatments, and strategies within anaesthesia, emergency, and intensive care for high-risk groups, such as juvenile, neonatal, and geriatric patients. The focus is primarily on horses, dogs, and cats, with some attention to laboratory animals and exotic pets.
Students are also taught ethics, toxicology, advanced anaesthesia cases, and the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement). The students practice maintaining veterinary nursing care plans, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), placing nasoesophageal tubes, handling and maintaining ventilators and other medical equipment, as well as managing blood gases.
The course includes training on organs, models, and/or live animals. Students also engage in activities aimed at professional development.
Teaching formats
The course employs various teaching methods to promote student learning and discussion through lectures, seminars, practical exercises, simulations and demonstrations.
The course focuses on the following generic competencies
Ethics, critical thinking, scientific methods, written and oral communication, group dynamics and information literacy.
The following components are compulsory
Some seminars, practical exercises, and activities related to professional development.
Collaboration with the surrounding community is integrated into the professional development component.

Passed written examination and approved participation in compulsory components.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
