The purpose of the course is to, through the study of plants in their natural environments, give the student basic knowledge of species identification and an understanding of the interactions between plants and their environment. After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- identify common plant species in the landscape based on their appearance, growth form and environment,
- assess plants' adaptations to their habitat in terms of local conditions and access to light, water and nutrients,
- identify species and environments that should be protected in order to promote biodiversity,
- recognize Swedish vegetation types and plant communities, and explain their connection to different site factors.
Content
Plant phylogenetic relationships, their appearance and adaptations to common habitats in Sweden are addressed during introductory lectures. The course is largely based on excursions and teaching is therefore largely conducted in the field and consists of demonstrations and exercises in groups or individually. A significant part of the time in the field is devoted to the presentation of plants, the adaptations of the plants to their habitats and the vegetation types that they inhabit. The importance of different species in promoting biodiversity is discussed. Species identification is practiced through exercises in identifying plants with the help of botanical literature. The course ends with an inventory assignment.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Approved written exams, approved inventory assignment and active participation in seminars.
Seminars and the inventory assignment are compulsory.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
