Objectives

The aim of the course is for the student to understand the role and contributions of various actors in wildlife management, and how to construct a wildlife management plan in Sweden.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to

• understand the bases for wildlife management in Sweden and internationally

• describe the role of various actors and their responsibility in wildlife administration

• account for the delegation of responsibility in Wildlife management

• establish a wildlife management and administrative plan

• account for how hunting in Sweden is organised and is carried out

Content

The course mainly has a Northern European perspective focusing on Swedish conditions. Emphasis is placed on own field management projects where the students report in a seminar. The project is to set up a wildlife management plan for a property. After visits to selected estates, the students gather information and then formulate their own management plan. The individual tasks consist in each student managing individual species and parts of the plan. The common task consists of aligning the management of the individual species in a realistic multi-sector perspective, describing this and discussing how to achieve the management goals.

The learning objectives of the course are achieved through self-study, teamwork, lectures, seminars, excursions and

exercises. Through exercises and seminar work, the student’s ability to analyze, process, synthesize and evaluate in field management is further developed . Exams in field management and practical exercises are also included. Teamwork are a compulsory element in the course.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed written examination and passed written and oral presentation of projects at seminars. Participation in compulsory parts is required to be approved.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.

• If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Additional information

The course is carried out in cooperation between SLU and the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management.



The course is primarily aimed at individuals who work or will work with questions that concern game administration within, for example, county boards, the forestry board, forest companies, hunting and wildlife entrepreneurs.



Entry requirements: Knowledge at the basic level equivalent to 30 credits in biology is for example achieved by:

- Two years of completed studies on the Bachelor of Science in Forest Management Program (Skogsmästarprogrammet) at SLU, or

- Three semesters - semester 1-3 - completed studies on the Bachelor of Science in Forest Sciences Program (Skogskandidatprogrammet) at Linnaeus University (Linnéuniversitetet)

During the course, we will meet at 3 occasions, weekdays or weekends. Several of the meetings will be carried out at Öster Malma Wildlife Management School in Sörmland.
