Prior knowledge

Basic knowledge in Chemistry equivalent to 10 credits of which 5 credits are Biochemistry.

Objectives

The course aims at giving basic knowledge and laboratory training in genetics, cell biology and microbiology. The students will get knowledge of the basic principles in genetics and fundamental knowledge of the structure, function and energy metabolism of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:

• describe organization, communication and function of the cell

• describe how genetic material is transferred between cells and generations

• analyze different types of inheritance, gene order and linkage between genes

• analyze the genetic variation within and between populations and evaluate natural processes affecting the population genetic structure

• calculate heritability of traits and the effect of selection

• describe the multiple ways of cells to extract energy

• describe the microbial background to the society problems related to use of antibiotics

• use basic laboratory techniques in genetics, microbiology and cell biology

• search and evaluate scientific information based on a scientific question

• write a report based on experimental results

Content

The course comprises genetics, cell biology and microbiology. Laboratory practicals constitute an important part of the course.

In lectures, and compulsory laboratory practicals and group exercises the following sections are addressed:

• structure, function and morphology of bacteria, fungi, plant and animal cells, and viruses

• the flow of genetic information: DNA-replication, RNA-synthesis, RNA-splicing and protein synthesis

• biological membranes, transport mechanisms and communication within and among cells

• cell division and formation of sex cells

• inheritance theory of Mendel and its extension

• genetic recombination and linkage analysis

• mutations

• population genetics and conservation of genetic diversity

• quantitative genetics

• energy metabolism and energy yield (aerobic and anaerobic respiration, fermentation, methanogenesis, syntrophy, litotrophy, photosynthesis) in bacteria

• bacterial genetics (conjugation, transduction and transformation)

• cultivation of microorganisms, substrate and growth

• disinfection and antibiotics

• fungi and bacteria, identification and classification

• information retrieval and lab report writing

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approved examinations, approved written assignments and oral presentations, and approved participation in compulsory activities.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Additional information

The prerequisites can be achieved, for example, by having attended the courses in Basic chemistry I, 15 hp (KE0062) and Basic chemistry II, 7,5 hp (KE0063) with at least 10 credits passed results. Course parts with passed results should include at least 5 credits Biochemistry.

Some learning activities may be conducted in English.
