Moving to and from Sweden for studies

Last changed: 13 March 2025

If you move to Sweden from abroad and are planning to live in Sweden, you are usually required to register on the Swedish population register. Once you have completed your studies in Sweden, you must notify the Swedish Tax Agency.

Different rules apply depending on your citizenship. To be able to register on the Swedish population register, you must intend to stay here and have the right to reside in Sweden for at least one year. You have the right to reside in Sweden if you:

  • are a citizen of a Nordic country;
  • are a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland;
  • are a family member of someone with right of residence;
  • have a residence permit issued by the Swedish Migration Agency.
