SLU has arranged separate insurance policies for exchange students in addition to personal injury insurance for students.

You are an exchange student if you study or are on placement in Sweden or abroad under a valid exchange or hosting agreement between SLU and a foreign university.

SLU has arranged insurance for:

  • Incoming exchange students
  • Erasmus Mundus students
  • Outgoing exchange students
  • Minor Field Study (MFS) students

Incoming exchange students

If you are an incoming exchange student at SLU, you are covered by personal injury insurance for students and by Student IN (in Swedish) insurance.

If you are a student on Erasmus Mundus Action 1, you are covered by personal injury insurance for students and by Student IN (in Swedish). The university coordinating your education must also have arranged insurance for you.

Student IN applies 24 hours a day in Sweden during your period of study, as well as two weeks before your studies begin and two weeks after they end.

Student IN insurance includes:

  • cover for healthcare costs in the event of an accident
  • a certain level of accident cover in the event of disability or death
  • liability and legal cover

You must be registered in LADOK as an exchange student in order to be covered by Student IN.

On the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency website you can read the full terms and conditions of insurance for Student IN (in Swedish).

Erasmus Mundus student

If you are a student on Erasmus Mundus, you are registered in LADOK at SLU as an exchange student.

If you are a student under Erasmus Mundus Action 1, you are covered by personal injury insurance for students and by Student IN (in Swedish). The university coordinating your education must also have arranged insurance for you.

If you are a student under Erasmus Mundus Action 2, the Division of Educational Affairs will arrange separate Erasmus Mundus (in Swedish) insurance for you.

Erasmus Mundus insurance includes the following, among other things:

  • healthcare and dental care cover
  • cancellation cover
  • liability cover

On the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency website you can read the full terms and conditions of insurance for Erasmus Mundus (in Swedish).

Outgoing exchange students

If you are an outgoing exchange student, you are covered by Student UT (in Swedish) insurance.

Student UT insurance applies 24 hours a day:

  • in the country of education, for as long as you are studying or on a placement, plus two weeks before your studies begin and two weeks after your studies end.
  • when travelling directly between the country of education and your home in Sweden or place of education in Sweden.
  • during holidays, provided that the insured remains in the country of education and continues their studies after the holidays.

The insurance provides insurance cover equivalent to the protection provided by personal injury insurance for students as well as travel insurance cover. Before you go on an exchange, you will be given a certificate of insurance from the Division of Educational Affairs.

If you are a Swedish citizen travelling to another EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you need to get a European health insurance card, or EU-kort/EHIC

Minor Field Study (MFS) student

If you are conducting a Minor Field Study (MFS) you are covered by Student UT (in Swedish) where there is an agreement between SLU and the foreign party.

If you are conducting an MFS where there is no agreement between SLU and the foreign party, the Division of Educational Affairs will arrange separate insurance.
