Objectives
The students will be able to describe common technological systems in Swedish and international livestock buildings for farmed animals.
At the end of this course, the students will be able to:
- describe common technical terms and systems used in Swedish livestock buildings,
- estimate ventilation needs, and perform a heat balance calculation,
- describe and explain various building systems for animal production,
- identify advantages and disadvantages in different building plan solutions for animal production
- provide examples of the most common technical systems in Swedish and international pig, dairy and poultry production and evaluate them according to the global sustainability goals.
Content
The course builds mainly on lectures and literature, in addition to assignments, demonstration and seminars. These assignments and seminars give students a better understanding of future work tasks in the sector of animal production. In lectures and literature, both Swedish and international research is presented.
During the course the students learn about terminology in building construction, how to read drawings for livestock buildings and how to ensure good welfare for labour and animals. An important topic in the course is about how the thermal environment of the animals is affected by the indoor and outdoor climate and how the animal welfare can be improved by ventilation and construction. An important part of this evaluation rests on a heat balance calculation for the livestock building taking into consideration heat losses-gains and ventilation.
In the course, the students will learn about technical equipment used in Swedish and international pig, poultry, and dairy and beef production buildings. The overview of the equipment cover systems for handling feed (including milling and mixing), manure, dairy milk, egg from hens and ventilation systems using either natural ventilation or electrical fans. The course covers how common building systems for farmed animals, which requirements have to be met according to standards to achieve good labour conditions, animal welfare and building function. As a synthesis, the students, in a group, will analyse a livestock building according to Swedish law and standards. This analysis is performed taking into consideration animal welfare, labour environment, building functions and the global sustainability goals.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed written exam. Passed assignments
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
