Objectives
During the course the student learn to describe and analyze how the prerequisites for a multifunctional forest varies with geography and how forest can be used in a long term sustainable way. The prerequisites encompass natural settings as well as ownership structure, infrastructure etc.
After completes course the student should be able to:
Describe and compare the prerequisite for forest production in south and north Sweden
Describe and compare how forestry is conducted in south and north Sweden
Identify the most important indicator species in the flora in southern Sweden and describe their ecology
Identify and describe the management of temperate broad-leaved tree species and their role in forestry in southern Sweden
Suggest measures to mitigate adverse effects by storm, fungi and insects.
Describe and problematize the conditions for multiple use of forest land
Orally present and discuss results from field exercises and group work.
Content
The days are filled with excursions and exercises. The length of the exercises varies; most of them are short but other span over several days. The study subjects during the course are: silviculture, soil science, vegetation ecology, game management, nature - and recreation values, and others. These mean that a lot of teachers are engaged in the teaching
Focus is on issues that are unique for southern Sweden, compared the northern part. Typical subjects are management of the temperate broad-leaved species, composition of the field vegetation, but also issues connected to how the ownership structure and the natural settings for forest growth influence how forestry is conducted. Interests beside the economic are also of great importance in southern Sweden. The relative large population and the urbanized society create a high demand on environments suitable for recreation. The dominating and intensive forestry with spruce has great economical advantages. However, losses due to storm, fungi and insects are substantial. It is therefore important to study how to mitigate the effect of these hazards.
It is compulsory to participate in all parts of teaching during the course including excursions, exercises, group work, assignments, lectures and presentations.
