Knowledge equivalent to 120 credits in forest science at basic level including- 7.5 credits in forest technology and
- 7.5 credits in wood science
Objectives
The course intends to give the student ability to understand and analyse the sustainable forest industrial supply chain from a market-oriented system perspective, so they can participate in the development of systems for more efficient raw material supply chains. On completion of the course, the students should be able to:
- account for the planning processes of wood supply, depending on a company’s market conditions.
- account for working methods and forms for timber trade.
- account for as well as carry out supply infrastructure and flow planning
- orally and in writing describe, analyse and discuss supply strategies and -structures for different combinations of companies, products and markets.
Content
This course focus on how forestry activities are structured in the long term to sustainably and resource efficiently supply industries with necessary raw materials. The course is divided into the sections supply strategy, timber trade, supply infrastructure planning, and flow planning. After the theory sections, a compulsary company case study is conducted in which earlier knowledge are applied through mapping and analysis of a company’s supply strategy. Compulsary moments are assignments and specific seminars.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed written examinations. Passed written and oral presentations of case studies. Passed exercises and approved participation in the compulsory activities.- If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
- If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
- If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor's and Master's level.
Other information
- The right to take part in teaching and/or supervision only applies to the course date to which the student has been admitted and registered on.
- If there are special reasons, the student may take part in course components that require compulsory attendance at a later date. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor's and Master's level.
Additional information
The course is the second in the so-called "RÅG-stråket", that is name of a package constituting three courses á 15 credits that together provide the forestry students with deep skills in forestry raw material supply management.. The previous course is "Raw Material Properties and Refining Processes" with a focus on raw material needs and - requirements for different forest industrial processes. This second course then follows with a focus on how forestry activities are structured in the long term to sustainably and resource efficiently supply industries with necessary raw materials. The third and final course in the package is "Forest Operations Control in Wood Supply" with a focus on the final steps of supply management: to go from plan to practical implementation with as efficient use of resources as possible. The RÅG-courses are made to prepare the student for work in the forest supply chain as e.g. harvesting managers and transport coordinators. The course is, as well as other RÅG-courses, therefore highly realistic, with extensive participation from industry representatives and with realistic exercises to let the students train their skills. The course continues to build on knowledge in the subjects forest technology and wood technology, why such knowledge is entry requirements. Students who have passed the basic course Forest Technology and Wood Technology (15 credits) or have passed both the courses Market-oriented Wood supply (7.5 credits) and Raw Material Properties and Refining Processes (15 credits), fulfil the special entry requirements about 7.5 credits in wood technology as well as 7.5 credits in forest technology. Replacing the course SG0208 (15 credits).SLU is environmentally certified according to ISO 14001. A large part of our courses
cover knowledge and skills that contribute positively to the environment. To further
strengthen this, we have specific environmental goals for the education. Students are
welcome to suggest actions regarding the course’s content and implementation that lead
to improvements for the environment. For more information, see webpage www.slu.se.
