Objectives

The objectives of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge of applied research methodology and scientific methods, as well as to independently train scientific review and assessment of experimental design. The course includes laws and regulations concerning the use of animals for scientific purposes.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

• independently plan and design a scientific study in animal science, biology or food science,

• discuss and critically evaluate experimental design and methods for data collection in own and others’ experimental plans,

• orally in English present a scientifically substantiated experimental plan to a defined target group,

• independently plan and lead seminars with a focus on assessment of experimental design and interpretation of data,

• perform practical skills and account for knowledge of practical experimental steps linked to a specific research methodology,

• account for laws and regulations as well as ethical issues regarding the use of animals for scientific purposes,

• explain how the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce and Refine) can be applied when using animals in research and what is meant by a caring culture,

• explain how housing, management and experimental methodology can affect experimental animals and research results.

Content

The course contains elements where the student can practice the skills required to carry out a research project. The student must independently plan and complete an experimental plan that can later be used in an independent work / degree project. In seminars, students will discuss scientific papers based on assessment of experimental design and interpretation of data. The students must also orally present their experimental plans in English to the course participants. The course also provides students with basic knowledge regarding legislation and regulations when using experimental animals. The course includes handling exercises of live animals.

The course includes practical skills training or theoretical in-depth study of skills linked to research elements in the student’s specific projects. Practical skills training can be carried out on your own initiative in a research environment outside SLU.

In addition to the written and oral examination, there are compulsory parts within e.g. seminars, presentations and practical skills training.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed written and oral examination. Passed participation in compulsory course modules.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.

Additional information

The course presupposes that the student can propose its own research project to work on. The student is expected to take personal responsibility in planning and carrying out the practical training in the course.
