Plant Protection, Basic Course
The course gives basic knowledge of plant protection. You will learn to identify common pests and diseases related to horticulture. As important is to learn about beneficial organisms, such as pollinators and predators, for example ladybirds. You will also learn the principle of integrated plant protection – to apply preventive measures rather than using pesticides through planning plant protection as a part of cultivation. Examination consists of practicals, an insect quiz and a written exam. The course is only available for programme students in horticultural management and garden design. The course is given in Swedish.

describe systematics, biology and morphology of important groups of pests and beneficial organisms in horticulture
have basic knowledge on integrated pest management and different plant protection actions
describe plant protections regulations, and environmental and health impact.
Content
The course content includes arthropods (insects, arachnids), nematodes, fungi, oomycetesm bacteria and viruses in horticulture based on:
biology and morphology of organisms
systematics of plant pests
biotic and abiotic symptoms
sources of infection and infection process
cultural measures in general, hygiene, certification and healthy plant material
biological and chemical plant protection strategies
basics of integrated pest management - introduction to invasive alien species
authorities, legislation and regulations within plant protection - introduction to environmental impact and health risks due to exposure to plant protection media
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
