Hej och Välkomna till Tring odlings första kurs som heter Botanik och växtkännedom.
Jag heter Maria Herneke Walter och är kursledare och examinator på denna kurs. Till min hjälp har jag Ludvig Landgren.

Vi öppnar även Canvas sidan som ni kommer att ha som lärplattform. På den kommer vi under sommaren lägga upp växtlistor på annueller och perenner vilka vi direkt kommer att börja att jobba med.

The aim of the course is to gain understanding and nomenclature about the plant structure, to learn to communicate about plants, to get an overview about the variation of plants and their end uses, as well as understanding of the relation to the growth site.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
describe the basic morphological structure of plants and function of different parts of plants
identify horticultural plants according to a basic assortment, and the most important plant families in horticulture
describe the basics of plant systematics and apply the basic rules of plant nomenclature
describe important factors that affect morphology of plants in horticultural and natural environments.
Content
The course includes botanical nomenclature, morphology and plant knowledge by studying:
how plants look like and how this can vary between and within species
names of plants and the function of different names
how to identify different plants and groups.
The course includes lectures (both webbased and live), demonstrations (indoors and outdoors) and exercises. Selfstudies give time for reading literature and processing of the course contents.
Some of the scheduled exercises are mandatory, which will be marked in the course schedule.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed written exams, approved home tasks and approved participation in compulsory components are required.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.

The course is given in the first term of Horticultural Management - Gardening and Horticultural Production, Bachelor´s Programme.
