- 60 credits Forest Scineces including 15 credits chemistry

- 60 credits Horticultural Science including 15 credits chemistry

Objectives

The course objectives are to give an introduction to advanced university studies, provide an overview of the syllabus of the master-program, its content, and structure, provide the students with working skills that prepare them for further studies and future work.



After completing the course the students should be able to:



- give an account of the basic biological conditions for plant production.

- with relevance to the subject area of the program, look up, compile, and present information on the possibilities and limitations of plant production, in writing and in speech.

- distinguish and form an opinion on ethical issues coupled with scientific activities within the subject area of the master program.

- give an account of basic philosophical conceptions within science and the scientific method.

- give an account of possibilities and limitations of the scientific subject area of the program to contribute to sustainable development.

Content

The course will give an introduction to the master program in Plant Biology for a sustainable production and its three different specializations: Forest biotechnology, Plant Protection and Plant Breeding, and Abiotic and Biotic interactions of Plants. The course will provide the students with a basic foundation for future University studies at the master level and a comprehension of the basic biological conditions for plant production.

The course lectures, exercises and excursions cover:



- basic plant biology, including plant physiology, metabolomic, genetics, and molecular genetics

- conditions for plant production, covering agriculture, horticulture, and forestry.

- basic statistics with relevance for the courses that follow in the master-program

- an introduction to ethical argumentation, sustainable development, science philosophy and the scientific method and science communication.

- scientific presentations, in oral and in writing.



At the excursions environments of importance for plant-production is visited and study visits are made to prepare the students for a future work. Excursions, Study visits, and Laboratory exercises are compulsory.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approved written exam. Approved written and verbal presentation of report. Participation in excursions, exercises and other compulsory moments.
  • If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
  • If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
  • If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
  • For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor's and Master's level.
