Information regarding a confirmed case of meningococcal infection in a student at SLU

Published: 21 February 2024

Recently, a case of meningococcal infection was confirmed in a student at SLU. In light of this, contact tracing has been conducted through the Infectious Disease Control Unit in Region Uppsala.

Individuals who have had close contact with the student and shared accommodation have been contacted and received antibiotic treatment as a preventive measure. The relevant period is February 11–20. The infectious disease physician does not recommend preventive treatment outside of this group.

Infection with meningococci is rare but can be serious. Last year, no cases were reported in Region Uppsala. In the presence of clear infection symptoms, such as fever, severe headache, vomiting, or diarrhea with simultaneous general malaise, it is important to contact healthcare for assessment.
