How the EU’s forest monitoring should be carried out is a question that has been debated and discussed for several years. Which methods should be used, remote sensing via satellite or ground-based methods, and should it be up to the member states to choose?
Currently EU institutions are negotiating a proposal for a legislation on forest monitoring with a view of reaching an agreement later in the year.
Göran Ståhl, professor of forest monitoring at the Department of Forest Resource Management, clarifies the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of forest monitoring and how the conditions for monitoring look in different parts of Europe. He is joined by Mia Crawford, responsible for EU and international affairs at Federation of Swedish Family Forest Owners (LRF), who shares her insight into the EU negotiations.
All staff and students at SLU are welcome.
