Information from the course leader

Objectives
The course gives a basis for an understanding of the processes, metabolism, genetics and histology of the cell.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
describe the structure and the function of the molecules, cells and tissues that build up organisms,
describe the bases in histology on cell and tissue level,
describe the bases in genetics,
describe the metabolism of the cell and the body at different physiological situations on cell and organism levels,
use microscopes practically.
Content
The course includes the structural and functional properties of the eukaryotic cell, histological structures of epithelium, connective tissue, nerve tissue and musculature, interactions between cells and their environment, cellular transport mechanisms, signal transduction, structure and function of biological macromolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids). Furthermore, enzymology, as well as the regulation of normal cell growth and differentiation and the basis for malignant transformation are included. In addition, basic genetic mechanisms (the structure of the genetic make-up, replication, transcription), RNA-processing, translation, regulation of gene expression, general genetics and population genetics, and the metabolism of the cell and the body and its regulation are included.
The course is based on lectures, group exercises and practical activities such as laboratory sessions and microscopy exercises. Some of the group exercises are compulsory.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed written examination and approved participation in compulsory elements.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Transitional provisions
Exams: At least three retake sessions (renewed exams) must be offered within two years of the decision to cancel the course. Compulsory elements: At least one opportunity for a retake session must be offered within two years of the decision to cancel the course.Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Additional information
The Veterinary Medicine programme applies a predefined study path, and the students are obliged to take the courses in the order given by the programme syllabus.Responsible department

Litterature list
Lista på lämplig litteratur för Biomedicinsk baskurs (VM0110)
Böcker markerade med fet stil är den litteratur som föreslås. Undervisningen utgår till stor del från dessa. Under Tema 1 behöver man både ”Biochemistry” (Ferrier), ”Essential…” (cellbiologi + molekylärbiologi) samt en av de böckerna rekommenderade för histologi. Under Tema 2 utgår undervisningen fr.a. från ”Biochemistry” (Ferrier). Under Tema 3 används fr.a. ”An Introduction to Genetic Analysis” – den boken behövs alltså inte tidigare under kursen
Biokemi/Molekylärbiologi/Cellbiologi
Biochemistry; Abali et al. 8th ed 2019, ISBN :9781975155117 (eller Ferrier, 7th ed. 2017); J.B. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
(mkt bra metabolism-avsnitt, mer fysiologiskt/medicinskt inriktad på metabolismen)
**Essential Cell Biology; 5th ed Alberts et al. 2019, Norton & Company **(även den 4th ed går bra, Alberts et al., 2014, Garland Publishing, Inc) (mkt bra, komprimerad variant av ”Molecular Biology of the Cell”)

(klassisk biokemibok: bra biokemi, molekylärbiologi, metabolism. Metabolism är mer molekylärt inriktad)
Molecular Biology of the Cell; Alberts et al., 6th ed. 2015, Garland Publishing
(mästerverk: cellbiologi, molekylärbiologi etc., inte bra på metabolism)
**Histologi **
Böckerna 1 och 2 är likvärdiga dvs en av dem räcker men det är bra om båda finns inom en basgrupp.
