Objectives
Students will be able to describe and plan how physical principles and technical solutions interact with animal housing.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Describe the most common building materials, construction principles and technical aids within Swedish animal housing,
- Perform a design of ventilation needs, and combine this with a calculation of heat balance,
- Describe and explain various housing systems for animal production,
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and argue for and against proposals for building plan solutions for animal production.
Content
Subject-related content
The course builds mainly on lectures and reading of the literature, which is dealt with through submitted assignments. Subject-intersecting components with other courses may occur. Students also have the opportunity to carry out exercises/laboratory practicals. A group project must be carried out and presented in writing and orally. Opposition of another group’s work is also included. The project work, which aims to develop an animal production enterprise on a farm, comprises three components (planning, inspection and mechanisation) that deal with different species of animals. Compulsory parts of the course is the introduction, reporting of projects and papers, laboratory work and study visits.
***Implementation***
The course employs a variety of teaching methods to support student learning and discussions, including:
- Lectures
- Learning through digital and written assignments
- Seminars and teacher-led discussions
- Study visits
- Project work based on real-life examples
The course focuses on the following general competencies:
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team context
- Complex reasoning based on collected and acquired knowledge
- Problem-solving skills in real-world situations
- Critical thinking
The following components are mandatory:
- Study visits
- Seminars
- Presentations
Collaboration with the surrounding society takes place through study visits, guest lectures, and real-world project assignments. In addition, seminars provide opportunities for students to critically examine and openly discuss issues related to the course’s subject areas.

The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
