Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course the student shall be able to

• describe and explain the concept of sustainable use of natural resources and give examples based on different case studies and land use scenarios
• describe different ecosystem services and ecosystem functions
• describe components of ecosystems and how they are affected by human activity on local and global level
• describe how different sustainability goals are affected by different land use
• describe and compare different policies for utilization of natural resources
• give examples of cultural differences especially between North America and Europe and describe how these differences can result in different approaches to the use and management of natural resources
• cooperate within a student group to prepare and perform presentations

Content

Subject-related content
Environmental, economic and social sustainability are addressed based on local conditions. Examples of activities studied from different sustainability perspectives include forestry, agriculture, aquaculture, and tourism. Comparisons are made between Europe and North America.

Students are given the opportunity to gain knowledge about different perspectives on sustainability issues, primarily in Europe and North America. The course includes an extended field trip and mandatory excursions. Different assignments are solved in student groups and/or individually.

The course focuses on the following generic competencies:

• Exercises focusing on communication and collaboration within and between student groups.
• Collection, processing and synthesis of information.
• Oral presentations and written reports in English. 

Collaboration with the surrounding community takes place through
Study visits to various stakeholders working with natural resources management or related issues.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

• Approved written and oral presentation of independent projects

• Approved group work

• Completed mandatory elements

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
