Introduction to forestry practices
This course focuses on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to how natural conditions and management interventions influence forest development over the long term.
The course provides a foundation for assessing a forest stand’s management history and for understanding how future interventions are selected and implemented in practice. It highlights the economic, environmental, and social consequences of different actions, as well as societal expectations and restrictions.
At the start of the course, teaching is primarily through lectures and seminars. Later in the course, when the weather is more favorable, excursions and field exercises are conducted to practice assessing stand history and planning future interventions.
Students should be aware that full-time study and daytime attendance are required, even though the course is scheduled as a part-time (half-speed) course over a 10-week period. This is because the course is coordinated with another programme course (BI1382, Forest Ecology and Botany, 7.5 credits). During the 10-week period, the weeks are alternated between the two courses, with full-time study during each respective week. This means that if only one of the courses is taken, there will be periods of full-time study alternating with periods with no formal study requirements.
