Objectives

The aim of the course is to demonstrate the variation in soil conditions, climate, vegetation and different nature types in northern Sweden and show sustainable forestry in terms of ecology, forest yield, economy and social aspects.

After completion of the course the student will be able to:

• describe and discuss local and regional variation in types of nature, geology and climate for soil and climate conditions in northern Sweden, including mountain forests, and how these conditions affect the prerequisites for sustainable forestry.

• describe and discuss how the structure of forest ownership and different forest uses, forest resources and history affect the conditions for sustainable forestry.

• identify and name common plant species in boreal forests, discuss their ecology, use basic methods and tools for species identification and accomplish basic studies in plant ecology.

• describe origin and specific features of vegetation types in northern Sweden and understand how these vegetation types are affected by succession and different land uses.

• Orally present a group assignment and reflect upon group dynamics development.

Content

The studies comprise reasons for regional and local variation in site productivity, forest regeneration and growth and yield in even-aged and uneven-aged forests, important abiotic and biotic damages to forests, nature conservation, wood quality issues, prerequisites for management for private forest owners and forest companies, as well as multiple uses of forests, especially forestry and reindeer husbandry.

During the excursions in northern Sweden, including the mountainous areas, different types of nature, geology, climate and general conditions for forestry are studied.

The course is based on outdoor teaching and major part of the course is conducted outdoors which includes travels and accommodation outside campus. The course consists of lectures, excursions and exercises. Excursions and exercises are compulsory.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approed oral and written examination.

Approved practical tests. Completed compulsory parts.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Botany and plant ecology make up 2,5 credits of the course and is a continuation of the botany education in previous courses. During the first part of the course the students work with plant ecological group assignments studying effects of different land use and natural succession.. Furthermore, typical plant species from north Swedish biotopes and their ecology are discussed and presented during the group assignments and also during some of the excursions.
