Botany and Plant Physiology

Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the student with basic knowledge of plants, their structure and function, as well as the use of plant material.
The student should be able to:
- discuss about how plants are affected by external factors by giving an overview of important physiological functions in the plant as well as the plant’s basic internal structure.
- identify a basic range of wild and cultivated plants relevant for use under different environmental conditions and life stages and describe their use.
- identify the most common weeds under different environmental conditions and life stages in horticultural environments.
Content
The course focus on basic knowledge of plants, their external and internal structure, physiological functions and on the identification of wild and cultivated plant species. The course also contains elements that deal with the use of plant material. The course is divided into three main parts: Spring plant knowledge, Plant physiology and Weed knowledge.
Spring plant knowledge focus on identification, uses, trade qualities and plant experience values from a selected range of spring flowering plants. This section also deals with the planning, planting and maintenance of different types of spring flowering plantings. The teaching is based on lectures, demonstrations and exercises.
Plant physiology includes: 1. the plant’s internal structures and structure (anatomy), 2. the plant’s water and nutrient uptake, 3. the photosynthesis, 4. the plant’s hormone system, 5. the development of plants. The focus will be on understanding how the plant is affected by various external factors. The teaching is based on lectures, group discussions and exercises.
Weed knowledge focuses on the identification in horticultural environments. The teaching is based on field teaching with exercises, lectures and submission of an independent written assignment on weeds.
Scheduled reports, exercises and group discussions are compulsory.
Teaching formats:
Lectures, literature studies, excercises, written excercises, written assignments, laboratory sessions, study visits, field excercises and presentations.
The course focuses on the following generic competencies:
Information competence, problem solving, oral communication, written communication.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
To achieve credit for the course, students must have participated in compulsory course components and achieved a pass grade in the exam.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Additional information
The course is compulsory within the Landscape Engineer Programme.Responsible department
