Principles of zoology, evolution and the natural history of domestic animals
Information from the course leader
Hej och välkomna till kursen BI1312 on the evolution and natural history of domestic animals!
Looking forward to meeting you all at 9:30 on Thursday 18th February 2021 over zoom (you'll get the zoom link for the course soon). Unfortunately the course will be taught and examined as a distance course this year…but I'm working to make it as interesting and relevant as possible.
The course literature book is a very good summary of the concepts we will discuss in the course, and expands on these details for those who are interested in this subject. But you can pass the course without it in case you were wondering :).
A preliminary course schedule is now on the homepage. The course is a combination of lectures that focus on core concepts and then guest lecturers who expand on these concepts by discussing their own research field (dogs, wolves, cats, snow leopards, horses, honey bees, to name a few).
By structuring the course in this way my aim is to make the course as fun and interesting as possible. Feel free to contact me at any time (matt.low@slu.se) if you have any questions about the course content. And yes I will be giving my lectures in English…but you are welcome to discuss, ask questions and do you exam in Swedish if you choose, and many of the species lectures will be given in Swedish. Don't worry, you'll do great.
Vi ses snart! /Matt

The course covers the systematics of the vertebrates, evolutionary history, ecology and main natures linked to their occurrence and way of live. The course puts in the sport and companion animals in his evolutionary context and gives an evolutionary and ecological perspective on these.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
describe the systematics of the vertebrates, ecology, biogeography, morphology and reproductive biology at a general level.
describe the evolutionary processes selection through natural selection as well as sexual selection.
account for comparative morphology of selected mammals and birds.
account for relationships between ecology and evolutionary history of vertebrates at a general level.
account for evolutionary and ecological perspectives on the domestication process.
search, review and discuss scientific literature.
Content
The course includes lectures, demonstrations, literature seminars, project work.
In the course, the following general skills are trained: Oral request.
