Do your master thesis in Benin or Tanzania!
Acquire experience and understanding of Biological Control in tropical tomato production.
We are offering the possibility to conduct a master project related to biological control in field produced tomato in the tropics. You are welcome to suggest own ideas or choose one of our projects within the topics of arthropod interaction, parasitism, predation, species identification (taxonomy), insect-plant interaction.
The tomato plant is attacked by several pest insects, among them several Lepidopteran species, both native and invasive, which are currently managed by an overuse of insecticides. Our newly started research focuses on identification and selection of natural enemies for the main Lepidopteran pests. We are interested in the species parasitising Lepidopteran eggs and larvae, how that is related to the host occurrence. We will also study how/if predator presence is related to the occurrence of Lepidoptera pests and/or agricultural management methods. To do this, we conduct both field and laboratory experiments, together with the Biodiversity Centre at IITA, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Benin and with World Vegetable Center in Tanzania.
Starting date: autumn 2019 or spring 2020
