Master/bachelor exam project 2021: Investigating bat populations in towns, Tierp municipality

Published: 16 October 2020

Tierp municipality would like to get more information about the bat populations in its towns, parks and nearby forests. Therefore we would like students to investigate the bat fauna, population densities and movement patterns etc. preferably as exam projects during 2021.

Application deadline: 2021-12-31

Tierp municipality is located between Uppsala and Gävle and consists of several smaller towns. Nature literarily lies around the corner and we strive to connect parks and other green areas with the adjacent forests and agricultural lands, through green infrastructure. Some of our green areas contain trees that are several hundreds of years old and, therefore, should make good habitats for bats.

Several of our towns are expected to grow during the coming years and we are planning new urban areas to meet the demand for housing. If we knew more about our bat populations we would be able to protect them better, for example by planning for parks or patches of nature where they are found in larger densities. This knowledge would also help us identifying town areas where we need to strengthen the green infrastructure in order to make it functional.
