Summary

A study about cat owners´ ability to detect pain in cats and cat owners´ ability to use validated pain protocols for cats for pain assessment. The study was carried out by a survey to cat owners including questions about pain in cats and a video material of cats with and without pain. The result indicated that the majority of the cat owners were able to detect cats´ signs of pain and the ability to do so correlated with their experience of being cat owners. The owners who have had several cats for many years in their lifetime assessed more correctly which cats in the video material that were in pain than the more inexperienced cat owners.
