Objectives

The overall goal of the course is to provide students with knowledge about sustainable forestry to provide society with raw materials and other ecosystem services.

After the course is completed, the student should be able to

• reflect on differences between forestry systems and describe the ecological, economic and social consequences of these

• explain the principles and apply concepts for forestry methods, its planning and implementation.

• apply basic forest economic calculations

• account for different types of raw material that forestry supplies for further processing, and describe the consumer products produced from the forest raw material and in a general way describe the industrial processes

• identify non-industrial values and ecosystem services in the forest and provide examples of how forest management can be implemented to improve these values

• discuss the potential for future products and values from the forest.

Content

The course deals with how forestry is conducted in the Nordic countries and covers the entire chain from nursery to the customer of a processed product with a focus on raw material production. International outlooks outside the Nordic countries are made, but the main focus is northern European forestry, which is a forestry with multiple purposes. The course content focus on forests and forestry to provide raw material to the forest industry and simultaneously provide a wide range of other ecosystem services.

The course is conducted with lectures, literature studies, seminars, study visits and excursions. Excursions, study visits and seminars are compulsory modules.

The Forestry Science content is divided into sub-areas as follows:

• 6 credits Work processes

• 5 credits Natural processes

• 4 credits Objective, planning and policy

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approved oral and written examinations and participation in compulsory parts.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Other information

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.

• If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Additional information

Students with agricultural background are recommended to take on knowledge of basic forestry at a level equivalent to, for example, "Grundbok för skogsbrukare" (Skogsstyrelsen 2021). The course is connected to a bachelor’s programme with a business orientation and students need to be able to understand business calculations based on discounting. If external funding can be arranged, excursions are carried out in connection with a study trip that is carried out at the end of the course.
