Climate change and humidity gradients – Explorative methods to meet current societal challenges

Course evaluation: As the course has changed name you find the course evaluation from last year following this link https://student.slu.se/studier/kurser-och-program/kurssok/kurs/LK0316/30042.2223/Experimentellt-studentprojekt-i-landskapsarkitektur/

In the Studio course Explorative methods to meet current societal challenges (LK0428) you try alternative exploratory methods to face complex societal challenges. You develop your own design method and process, find new solutions and a way to communicate in an explorative way. We also plan for a study trip to our site in Kalmar and the shallow shorelines of Skåne in the end of the first phase to learn from other examples.

This year's theme is “Climate change and humidity gradients” and we connect it to the research project COALA https://www.slu.se/institutioner/stad-land/forskning/Landskapsarkitektur/pagaende-projekt/coala/ where both the course leader/SLU and other organisations like SMHI, SGI, Kalmar municipality, Konstkiosk is part. We might also connect to another research project of the course leader on our trip to Skåne https://portal.research.lu.se/en/projects/pufendorf-theme-coastal-perspectives

The teaching team formulates the annual challenge, and initiates early exploratory workshops. The students specify the larger project task (in consultation with the teachers), and decide upon: which project idea, which methods to use, and how to visualize and communicate. There are three important phases in the course: 1. Understand (examine/accept) the challenge; 2. Act (process a solution) and 3. Communicate (present).

The focus of the course is project work, but it also includes lectures, literature and seminars. Great emphasis is put on visual and experimental investigation both in the sketch and in the communication phase. The course contains individual as well as common compulsory elements. The group's joint discussions and analyzes are important contributions to the results from the course and to be present and working together in the Ateljé (especially in the first part of the course) is crucial for your own and your student colleagues progress towards good and creative landscape architects.
