Studio – Urban ecology for landscape architecture

The course consists of lectures, seminars and studio projects and have two parts. One theoretical that cover terminology and main aspects of landscape and urban ecology and principles of ecological design. The other applying these knowledges in real case situations.

The students discuss and works with a broad range of aspects in the field such as landscape patterns and environmental processes, disturbance, succession, fragmentation, biodiversity, ecosystem services, technical solutions for low impact design and long term management.

The students produce conceptual strategies and ecological design solutions in groups on an overall level, such as dealing with green-blue structures on an urban-rural scale. Individually, the students continue designing on detailed levels that are important for urban development, such as an urban district or a city block. The different proposals will be based on real case, on site, scenarios in Sweden. Themes can shift between years and deal with housing, recreation, communication, health, trade etc.

Field trips around Uppsala and a longer trip in Sweden or neighboring countries provides important insights in how ecological design principles can be implemented.

Project work, seminars, exercises, field trips and activities connected to them are compulsory.

Course start

The course introduction and roll call, Wedneday 20/3, starts at 8:30 in Sal X, Ulls hus, Ulls väg 27. Welcome!!

TEXT FROM EMAIL 20240222

We are going to end the excursion a bit earlier on Tuesday 21/5, making it possible to take the earlier train (17:07). This gives us a better margin if the train to Stockholm is delayed. We hope you understand and we apologise for not thinking of this earlier. We were so focused on the excursion's content and getting sufficient time in Österlen.

(SJ hasn't yet released the tickets for the 17:07 train.

We will soon upload an updated version of the schedule.

TEXT FROM WELCOME - EMAIL 20240220

We hope you're all looking forward to our course-start next month! We sure are.

An extra warm welcome to all of you who are new to Uppsala and Sweden. The adress-list hints that at least eight different countries are represented this year. A new record for us!

The course introduction and roll call, on Wedneday 20/3, starts at 8:30 in Sal X, Ulls hus, Ulls väg 27.

Today we have done some minor adjustments in our literature list that you find on our course page. All literature will be available as pdf on the Canvas course page when the course starts.

Today we have also added a detailed schedule on the course page.

In the schedule, as well as in our excursion programme you find that our excursion to Malmö-Österlen will take place 20-21/5. We will start at Malmö C at 8:00 on Monday 20/5 . Apart from the tourbus that will take us to our various stops in Malmö and Österlen, students finance travel costs to and from Malmö, as well as the stay in Malmö.

If it is possible for you, and you haven't been to Malmö or Copenhagen before, we warmly recommend to add extra days before and/or after the excursion. There is plenty more to see and we will happily recommend other inspiring places for you to visit.

If you are entitled to study support for students with disabilities, remember to contact us before the course starts.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
