Overall environmental goals

Last changed: 06 November 2017

SLU has adopted university-wide environmental objectives in the fields of energy use, business travel, procurement, environmental monitoring and assessment and education for sustainable development.

Energy use

Status 2017-09

Objective 1.1

Using 2014 as the base year, SLU will increase its self-sufficiency in energy (electricity) in all its properties (rented or owned) by at least 13% by 2020. For heating, the degree of self-sufficiency should continue to be above 90% in properties managed by SLU.

Follow-up: During 2016, solar cells were installed in Alnarp, Lövsta and Röbäcksdalen. The degree of self-sufficiency  in electricity in properties rented or owned by SLU has consequently increased somewhat, to 11.3%, in line with the objective. The Grimsö hydropower project is likewise progressing according to plan, and the same holds for heating, not least as several measures were taken during the year.

Objective 1.3

Energy savings for properties owned or rented by SLU of at least 1% per square metre and year, with 2012 as the base year. This means total savings by 2020 of 9% per square metre and year.

Follow-up: According to statistics, energy consumption has been reduced by 3% (annual follow-up).

Business travel

Status 2017-09

Objective 2.1

SLU will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from travel by 10% per full-time employee before the end of 2020, compared to 2013.

Follow-up: Compared to Q2 2013, travel has been reduced by 19% per full-time employee.

Objective 2.4

Carbon dioxide emissions from domestic air travel to be reduced by 20% per full-time employee by the end of 2020, compared to 2013.

Follow-up: Compared to Q2 2013, domestic air travel has increased by 5% per fullt-time employee. Total domestic air travel has been reduced by 3%.

Objective 2.5

The number of travel-free meetings (videoconferencing) to increase by 15% before the end of 2020, compared to 2016.

Follow-up: At the end of Q2 2017, the number of travel-free meetings had increased by 87% compared to the end of Q2 2016.

Status 2017-09

Objective 3.5

By 2019, all procured agreements where environmental criteria are deemed relevant based on an environmental risk analysis should offer options marked 'Bra miljöval' wherever possible.

Goods and services that are or may become marked 'Bra miljöval' should, provided it is technically possible, be available in Proceedo and indicated by a green leaf symbol.

Follow-up: For all procurements that have resulted in agreements with a starting date of 1 January - 30 June 2017, an environmental risk analysis has been performed. In four of these cases, the analysis resulted in the introduction of environmental criteria. None of the agreements resulted in 'Bra miljöval' options. The reason for this is that only one (1) of the agreements is a framework agreement (for procurement consultancy services), and in this case it was not considered relevant to apply environmental criteria. The other agreements concerned procurement of defined goods or services.

Objective 3.6

Follow-up of at least one (1) procurement annually to determine if, and to what extent, the environmental impact has been reduced.

Follow-up: Follow-up of one (1) procurement, for restaurant and catering services, is planned for 2017.

Education for sustainable development

Status 2017-09

Objective 4.2

All course coordinators will be offered at least one day of training in education for sustainable development. At least 75% of course coordinators to have taken this training by the end of 2017.

Follow-up: The total number of course coordinators is around 420, which means the objective is that at least 315 (75%) of them should take this traning. To date, 118 course coordinators (around 29%) have taken the training. During 2017, training will be offered in both Swedish and English at all SLU campuses. This objective is deemed attainable if measures  are taken.

Environmental monitoring and assessment

Status 2017-09

Objective 5.1

To contribute to the environmental efforts of society even more, SLU has adopted the obejctive of increasing the use if its environmental assessment data among decision-makers, authorites, researchers and the public. This objective also includes clarifying which data are accessible and that they fulfil SLU's quality criteria. The turnover of this area of operations is used as an indicator, and for the objective to be fulfilled turnover should increase from SEK 402 million (2014) to SEK 442 million in 2018.

Follow-up: Turnover has increased by SEK 20 million between 2016 and 2017 (incl. adjustment for cost increase) and is now SEK 427 million. This objective is deemed attainable (annual follow-up only)

Objective 5.3

Within 1.5 years from launch, or no later than 31 December 2017, work should be concluded and information, so-called metadata, on the environmental monitoring data available should be published on the SLU web.

Follow-up: 25 (33%) units have achieved this objective, a modest increase compared to the end of last year. Even if all units who have started this work should, in principle, be able to finalise it before the end of the year, it will be difficult to prioritise this work.
